Curtiss-Wright Prototype Aircraft, the XP-55 "Ascender"

The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender was an unconventional aircraft design that never went into production. In 1939, the Army requested proposals from manufacturers for a superior airframe with an emphasis on speed and visibility for the pilot. The XP-55 Ascender's distinguishing features included a rear-mounted, "pusher-style" propeller and a cockpit lever for ditching the propeller in emergencies. Its distinctive design earned it the nickname "Ass-ender" in jest.

The XP-55 Ascender was a visually intriguing, though ultimately underwhelming, aircraft that never made it to production, for the best.
