Split Rock Scenic Historic Lighthouse
After a powerful storm in 1905 sank nearly 30 vessels, a steamship executive spearheaded a mission to construct the famed Split Rock Lighthouse. Completing it in 1910, the beacon safeguarded vessels hauling fresh ore from the Iron Range in upper Minnesota for half a century. Author James Oliver Curwood described the North Shore of Lake Superior as "the most perilous body of water on earth." As advanced navigational technologies such as LORAN, radar, and GPS developed, lighthouses became less necessary and Split Rock Light Station shuttered in 1969. Minnesota assumed control of the 25-acre area in 1971, handing oversight to the Minnesota Historical Society five years later. The grounds were readied in the early 1920s style and thousands stream to the lighthouse and visitor center yearly to acquaint themselves with this Minnesota symbol and absorb the Lake Superior scenery.
