Chicago Harbor Lighthouse - Historic lighthouse in Lake Michigan

The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse was built for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 and moved to its current location in 1919. The American Lighthouse Commission highlights its "state-of-the-art" commercial and engineering achievements. The Chicago Harbor lighthouse is a 111-foot-tall (34 m) skeleton cast-iron lighthouse.
A number of Fresnel lenses were also on display at the fair, including the stunning third-order Fresnel lens that won first prize at Paris Glass. This lens has alternating red and white panels and has been ordered to be installed at the New Point Loma Lighthouse California.  The coincidental end of the construction of the new Chicago Harbor Lights and the end of the exhibition prompted the Lighthouse Commission to keep the lens in Chicago, and so install the lens in the lighthouse of the new tower.  The original lens has since been removed, Now on display at Cabrillo National Monument in California.
Surrounded by rip rap, the structure has several levels: a concrete base and two red-roofed buildings with a tapered white cylinder between them, topped by a parapet and the light itself.
In 1917, the breakwater was renovated. At that time, the lighthouse was moved to its current location, with a fog signal room and a boathouse attached.
The unique design. .. similar to a sea spark plug tower, but this tower is taller. Aside from what was added at the time of the relocation, it shares some similarities with the contemporary Rock of Ages Light near Isle Royale in Lake Superior.
The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1984, and was later designated a Chicago Landmark on April 9, 2003.
In 2005, the Coast Guard declared the lighthouse excess. It was freely available to eligible entities, including federal, state and local agencies, nonprofit corporations, and educational organizations, under the provisions of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. On February 24, 2009, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar began moving the lighthouse to the city of Chicago. The city designated the lighthouse a Chicago Landmark on April 9, 2003.
The lighthouse's important role in Chicago's development is commemorated in a relief called "Spirit of Water" located near the LaSalle Street entrance to Chicago City Hall.
