  • Phil Hill becomes the first American to win the championship, driving for Ferrari in 1961
  • Graham Hill wins the championship for BRM in 1962
  • Dan Gurney wins the French Grand Prix for Porsche. The only win for Porsche as a constructor
  • The introduction of the revolutionary Lotus 25 which Jim Clark drove to the championship in 1963
  • John Surtees wins the championship in 1964, becoming the first driver to win both the World Motorcycle and Formula 1 titles
  • Jim Clark wins 7 or 10 races, on his way to the 1965 championship, driving a Lotus 33-Climax
  • Engine displacement change from 1.5 liters to 3 liters for 1966
